Opencut.org Complete Edit, Sound design is king

Opencut.org 1 is complete and a winner has been announced. Click here to read about the end of the contest. Mine didn't win, but the version that did was quite good also. One of the main things that the winner, Carsten Kurpanek, and myself, as well as a couple others did, was pay attention to sound design. There is an old saying which is something like "75% of what you see is what you hear", and this proves so true. As I sat and watched all the Opencut entries, you could tell about 30 seconds in if the version had a chance of winning. There were too many edits that paid no attention to sound, and the pieces really felt flat. Everyone used music, but very few used sound effects. Many times the music was also disjointed from the action that was going on in the visuals. Simple example.....there is a scene where Ed makes Jacob drop a knife out of his hand. Only about 3 edits added the sound of the knife hitting the floor. Go back and watch the different versions, and see what a difference such a little detail can make. Most people spent so much time on the end credits, they let the main piece fail. Editing is about visuals, pacing, and SOUND. I am not entering Opencut.org 2, as I am a bit busy, plus I am really not interested in the content. Hopefully those who do will learn something from those who did 1.0, and make things right from the start.
